A little over three years ago I started a blog. At the time I was 17 years old and beginning to think about college. I figured it would be the perfect time to start something that I had wanted to do since I was 12 and began watching YouTubers who also had blogs. With a grand total of only three posts over just four months, my blog (if you can even call it that) came to an unofficial end. I kept telling myself I would start it back up. But, I never did.
Now, three years later, here I am for a second attempt. This time, however, my GPA depends on it. I am currently enrolled in MEJO 577: The Branding of Me in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My professor, Gary Kayye, has the entire class create blogs on topics of their choosing. I am choosing to continue the ‘Lifestyle’ theme that I originally started due to my interests including beauty, style, travel, and much more.
For this post though, I wanted to talk a little bit about why I chose ‘Madelyn, Not Madison’ as the name for my blog. My given name is Madelyn, but when I was born, my brother wanted my name to be Maddie. So growing up, he and most of my family and friends called me Maddie. This lead to people assuming that Maddie was a shortened version of Madison instead of Madelyn. I got called Madison so often that I began answering to it. When I was trying to think of a clever name for my blog a couple of years ago, I thought about the numerous times I had said “It’s Madelyn, not Madison,” and thought it would fit.
The ironic thing now is that my brother actually married a Madison, who goes by Maddy. With us both being Maddie (or in her case, Maddy) Welches, I find myself using the phrase more than ever.
So, thanks to Gary, you will now be hearing from me twice a week. While I jokingly mentioned that my GPA depended on this blog, I am actually really excited to continue this journey that I set out on years ago. I hope you’ll continue it with me.
